This is the first arcade machine I ever remember seeing in my life, as a toddler I lived in an apartment building next to a warehouse and I remember one of the floors had an unplugged Popeye machine in the middle of the room…..I never got to see it plugged in or on, I used to always wonder and imagine what the game was actually like…..it was about 10 years later I finally got the chance to play a Popeye cabinet for the first time at a RV campground somewhere traveling across the USA from New Hampshire to Wyoming
I play this game when I get got 12 years old I got the spinach then I got the spinach then i punched the guy did he come back to life then she touch me with his dirty fingers then punch me to my death
Since 1985 germany put a ban on setting up arcades in public places accessible to minors. Well with one exception, if your arcade was set up at the same place before 1985 you could keep it around. A local pub had popeye since then always in the same place for 35 years… they never moved even a little so they retained the right to keep it in a public place. The pub owners grandson is now running the pub and has been repairing this cabinet for all these years. When in 2002 the law was relaxed he finally moved the cabinet for cleaning the floor and found like €100 in lost coins below the cabinet.
The original owner was a pretty relaxed guy and gave always free games when parents with kids where around. And they never raised pricing, it was 0,50DM in 1985 and even today it is only 0,50 Euro.
My hometown used to have a Skaggs (soon to be an Osco Drug) and they had this game, as well as Donkey Kong 3, over by the entrance/exits, and I remember trying to play this game as a child. As I recall, I wasn't very good at it.
This game has such a large place in my heart. It was one of the earlier arcade titles I played, and when I got a Colecovision for Christmas in 1985, it was one of the games waiting for me that day, along with Donkey Kong and Mouse Trap, making this one of the first video games I ever owned. I later got the NES port the day after Christmas in 1993 at a local video rental store.
I dont usually like popular character themed games like this because the show is usually primary over the game play. This was an exception. This was an awesome game.
2:04 – you can climb UP the ladder? I NEVER KNEW THAT. I only played this game on the Commodore 64 though, perhaps you can't on that machine. How funny to find out 40 years later.

i’ve got this on mame wii. good game back in the day👍
Those who don't like spinach disliked the game.
👍🏻
These days the game would probably be removed or boycotted for not having enough transgender representatives or some other SJW nonsense.

These graphics look amazing for 1982!!!!
The music suck so bad and is nowhere the same as the original.
First place I saw this game was at the skating rink.
