It was a special time. Developers cared about putting love into their games….that and milking you for every quarter you had.
28:49 WHAT?! WTFACK?!
Best of the best with lambada theme 😂😂😂😂😂
yo yo Gary, you need to enable the THANKS button. cheers bro…
Last year before the 3d storm. Developers tried their best with 2d games … rip 🙏 🪦
Looks like 1994 was the year of "let's steal SFX from earlier games!" arcades.

I think the arcade market lacks quality control, that's why we have so many crappy shovelware card and puzzle cards.

Another great video to digest over time — to me, some amazing games in 1994! Things that stand out:
– Several of the good shmups from 1994 ended up ported to Saturn in 1995-1996: Darius Gaiden, Fantastic Journey (aka Gokujyou Parodius), Gunbird & Kingdom Grandprix. Saturn really was trying to be "the arcade experience at home" at least in Japan. It ended up losing to Playstation worldwide because of the new & exciting kinds of home gaming that Sony and its partners cooked up … very different from the arcade.
– 1994 a real golden age of fighting games: from Capcom we got SF II Turbo (maybe the best ever SF release), plus awesome X-Men Children of the Atom, and Darkstalkers: The Night Warriors (a personal favorite). 3D fighters beginning to come on strong with Tekken from Namco, and (already!) Virtua Fighter 2 from SEGA 3 months before its JP Saturn release. I also like SEGA's unsung 2D fighter from '94, Golden Axe: The Duel, nice art style & fun gameplay, later ported to Saturn like a lot of these games. Several good fighters from SNK, including Samurai Shodown II which may be the best SamSho (though I'm partial to SamSho III because I played it a lot on Saturn). Plus Killer Instinct, Mortal Kombat 3, Primal Rage … Also some of my most beloved Capcom beatemups: Alien vs Predator, Armored Warriors, & Tenchi wo Kurau II (aka Warriors of Fate).
– Quite a few games on this list are arcade-only gems I've never played but would like to! Standouts are Alpine Racer (is this the same 3D engine they used for Ridge Racer? looks fun!), Gun Master (Gunstar Heroes meets 2D fighting game), Nebula's Ray (like a cartoonier Galactic Attack/Layer Section/RayForce from Namco, a lot going on), Rail Chase II from Sega (a shooting gallery on rails game, same year as the much more famous Virtua Cop), and Recalhorn (a never-released Taito platformer).
– A lot of fun soccer games! I know Sega's Virtua Striker and SNK's Super Sidekicks 2 the best … but want to try out the rest as well. A good soccer game is right next to a good fighting game as one of my favorite 2-player head-to-head gaming experiences. … and my feeling is that mid to late 90s soccer games were just more fun than their counterparts today. Arcade-y soccer is the best for videogames.
😘🎵 Thanks again … & again 🙂
Many of those games are Still awesome today 😎👍
Fantasia great game i love it 😂
Today's themes: Qix clones, lewds, lewd Qix clones, and SOCCER! So…much…soccer…
Good work. 23 I knew of and 46 I'd like to try with around 6 or so I have on other consoles. I never even knew some of these games existed and I'm glad you did this vid so I can find it. Thank you.
All these games and their iconic music just brings me back to the arcade rooms.
Tremendous videos Gary. Will you be doing 1995 onwards?
I've been searching for months for a particular game I used to play in the arcades and I think it was made somewhere in the mid 90s.
All I remember is that it was 2 player, player 1 being a blue suited soldier and player 2 was an orange suited soldier, both with large shotguns that I think shot blue laser bullets. It was a side scroller game and just cannot remember the name. I know my explanation is a bit flaky, but any ideas???
As always your videos are absolutely outstanding! Thank you so much for doing all the footwork for us who don't have the time but love the retro! The 10-second intervals between videos is perfect.👌Let's me skip ahead exactly to the next game if I'm already familiar or not interested.
Are most of the arcard games made by japnese devs? ‘Cause i always have that vibe when i see an old arcade games
